What is Blush?
Blush, also known as cheek color, is one of the most commonly used beauty products since the 1990s. As cosmetic products evolved, blush became available in various forms, shades, and application techniques—and that’s what we’ll explore in this article.
When applying foundation, concealer, and skin-correcting products, the skin’s natural rosy glow is often neutralized. That’s why blush is used: to restore natural color to the cheeks, giving the face a healthy, radiant appearance.
Types of Blush
Blush is generally divided into two main types:
Powder Blush
Powder blush is applied directly to the face, either without makeup or after applying and setting foundation. In this case, it’s recommended to use a primer to help the blush last longer. Powder blush is better suited for dry skin.

Cream Blush
Cream blush can be applied either before or after foundation. It can be blended using your preferred tool—whether it’s a sponge, brush, or your fingers. One key advantage of cream blush over powder blush is its long-lasting wear.
You can also apply cream blush and then set it with powder blush to enhance and intensify the color.Cream blush is generally better suited for oily skin.

Cheek Tint (Liquid Blush)
Cheek tint is a water-based product infused with pigment that has multiple uses, including as a blush for the cheeks and a stain for the lips. It has gained significant popularity recently due to its ease of application, long-lasting wear, and wide range of shades.
One of its key advantages is that it is suitable for all skin types.
How to use it: Apply a small amount of product to the cheeks or lips, then blend it quickly using a brush or your fingers, as it dries rapidly.

How to Apply Powder Blush
The method for applying blush depends on the shape of the face and the area you want to highlight. However, for applying powder blush, there are some general steps to follow:
- You’ll need a small to medium-sized brush with soft, not too dense or tightly packed bristles.
- Choose a blush shade that suits your skin tone (we’ll discuss how to pick the right blush shade at the end of this section).
Steps for application:
- Dip the brush lightly into the blush pan, swirling gently in a circular motion to pick up product.
-Tap off the excess by either gently tapping the brush on the back of your hand or blowing lightly on the bristles.
- Start applying blush on theapples of your cheeks, then blend outward toward the temples if you want to emphasize the cheeks.
- If you want to lift the face and emphasize the cheekbones, start applying blush from the middle of the cheek, blending upward and outward toward the temples.
- Continue building the color until you achieve the desired intensity.Tip: If, after applying blush, you feel the color is too intense, step back from the mirror for a few minutes to let your eyes adjust. Then check again. If the color still feels too strong, soften it by applying a light layer of loose powder over it.
How to Choose the Right Blush Shade for Your Skin Tone
Skin tones can generally be divided into three categories:
Fair skin: Opt for light pink or soft peach blush shades, which enhance your complexion and give a natural glow.
Medium (olive) skin: Choose shades that add warmth and radiance, like apricot and bronze tones.
Deep (dark) skin: Go for red, orange, and brown shades—these colors add vibrancy and bring dull skin to life, giving it a more radiant appearance.
